Boys basketball: Shumpert triple-double leads Eagles' rout in state opener

Published: 02.13.2008

The eighth triple-double of the season for Santa Rita's Darnell Shumpert helped the Eagles advance to the second-round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs with a commanding 81-55 win over Buckeye on Tuesday night.

Shumpert finished with 16 points, 15 rebounds, 11 blocks and five assists for the No 2-seeded Eagles.

Santa Rita jumped out to a 24-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and cruised to victory over the tournament's No. 15 seed.

"In the first quarter, we came out and played great basketball," Santa Rita coach Jim Ferguson said. "We coasted after the first quarter. It is hard to keep up the intensity after getting up that high."

Sophomore Terrell Stoglin had a game-high 24 points for Santa Rita. David Banks led Buckeye with 17.

Santa Rita plays No. 7 Phoenix Arcadia at home at 7 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.
